City of Glass chapter titles
So I'm at the stage where I'm going through the proofs for City of Glass, which means a giant stack of paper is sitting on the table in front of me, getting in Sarah's way, and I keep cursing, which probably annoys Robin and Maureen. The proof stage is my last chance to change anything in City of Glass, and it's also, sadly, the version of the book which goes into the ARC, which makes me sad because I've already discovered a million errors. Some of these are the kind only I will notice, but others are of the kind in which, say, one chapter title is mispelled and another repeats, twice, so that three chapters appear to be named the exact same thing, as if I had a great failure of imagination on the naming front and just decided to assume no one would notice. This makes me sad because if you know me you know I insanely enjoy naming things like chapters. It gives me a chance to use pretentious quotes from poetry that I love and have been saving up for such occasions. So since I had to make a list of the chapters and their titles in order so that I could properly correct the proof, I thought I'd post them below, along with their sources, whether it be poetry, a saying, or the text itself. Just for fun.

Chapter One: The Portal

Self-explanatory, especially if you've read the first chapter.

Chapter Two: The Demon Towers of Alicante

“Those are the demon towers,” Jace said, in response to Simon’s unasked question. “They control the wards that protect the city. Because of them, no demon can enter Alicante.”

Chapter Three: Amatis

In which we meet Amatis, a character mentioned once, briefly, in Ashes.

Chapter Four: Daylighter

Well, what else are you going to call a vampire who can walk around during the day?

Chapter Five: A Problem of Memory

In which the Inquisitor would like Simon to remember something that never actually happened.

Chapter Six: One of the Living

“A true vampire knows he is dead. He accepts his death. But you, you think you are still one of the living," said Raphael.

Chapter Seven: Bad Blood

"“Everyone seemed to blanch when your name came up earlier," said Sebastian. "I gathered there was some bad blood between your brother and you.”

Chapter Eight: Where Angels Fear to Tread

“Fools rush in/Where angels fear to tread” — Alexander Pope

Chapter Nine: This Guilty Blood

“I am ashamed/of these foul deeds;/Nor with this guilty blood/Sprinkled, would I pollute the innocent.” —Euripedes, Hercules

Chapter Ten: Fire and Sword

“Their state
The noblest-born must abdicate;
The fairest, while with fire and sword
Come Spoilers--horde impelling horde.” — William Wordsworth

Chapter Eleven: All the Host of Hell

Milton. “the hollow abyss Heard far and wide, and all the host of hell With deafening shout returned them loud acclaim."

Chapter Twelve: De Profundis

De profundis: In Latin, "out of the depths.” Psalm 130 is known as "De Profundis;" it begins "Out of the depths have I cried unto thee, O Lord."

Chapter Thirteen: Where There is Sorrow

Oscar Wilde. “Where there is sorrow, there is holy ground.”

Chapter Fourteen: In the Dark Forest

Reference to the beginning of Dante’s Inferno. “I found myself within a forest dark” — the narrator, Dante, wanders in a dark forest of confusion and grief.

Chapter Fifteen: Things Fall Apart

Yeats’s famous poem “The Second Coming” : “Things fall apart/The center cannot hold”

Chapter Sixteen: Articles of Faith

Articles of faith is a general expression for statements of faith-belief all across Christianity and other religions. The Nicene Creed ("Credo in unum Deum, Patrem omnipotentem, factorum coeli et terrae") is an article of faith.

Chapter Seventeen: The Shadowhunter's Tale

This mirrors The Werewolf’s Tale in book one.

Chapter Eighteen: Hail and Farewell

From a poem by Catullus. Ave Atque Vale, means hail and farewell. Shadowhunters say it when someone dies in battle.

Chapter Nineteen: Peniel

Peniel is where Jacob wrestled the angel in the Bible.

Chapter Twenty: Weighed in the Balance

“Mene Mene Tekel Upharsin” : “You are weighed in the balance, and found wanting.” From the book of Daniel.

Epilogue: Across the Sky in Stars

TE Lawrence: “Because I loved you, I took these tides of men into my hands, and wrote my will across the sky in stars.”

Today's the 200 day mark---man, I remember when it was 200 days til Ashes.

The Shadowhunter's Tale---Jocelyn, perhaps?...*intrigued*
Very interesting all around...fun to look at now, and I'll no doubt come back after the book's out to see how they all related.

...I really have a tendency to overuse the word interesting. I edited out three others and still used it once.

Okokok, I absolutely LOOOOOOOOVE the current trend of authors making poetry references in chapter titles/book titles (as in, "Book I of II" or something). I read them and feel instantly excited and - I'll admit it - "special", because I actually recognise the poems the references come from...

And just randomly - because you mentioned De Profundis - another neat thing to do is to read through the old Latin Sacramental rites. There are some neat gems to be found in the old prayers. One of my favourites, for example, comes from the old Roman funeral rite, and I have always thought that it fits well with vampires and their frequent struggle to come to terms with what it means to be among the damned...

I couldn't read through all of these because I fear I might get spoiled.
I will say that I'm sure twenty chapters is far from sufficient in ending this wonderful and epic tail!
tisk tisk! ;)

I know you feel about those mistakes. I'm no writer, but having people review my animations I see EVERYTHING, and they never notice these things... but they are epic you see.

Speaking of which, my finals are almost over, so I can FINALLY finish that page I did for you...(and hopefully start more!)

Ahh! such a tease! I tried not to read too much into it, I don't want to ruin it for myself. Good luck with the editing. :D

Cassandra, and you Christian?
Nice titles, very intruiging. I have to read Bones again, and then get to Ashes still!

Just out of curiosity, is the Chinua Achebe novel Things Fall Apart's title also from the Yeats poem?

They sound really nice-I especially like the image I get from the last one ^^

Chinua Achebe
Yes, it is! I think the poem is in the beginning of the novel.

Don't go breaking your brain or anything with stress. I'm really excited about City of Glass, I've loved the story so far and I can't wait to see where you take it. I didn't read the chapter titles or the first chapter because I want to absorb everything when I finally get your book the day it comes out.

First: you are not only a wonderful writer, a clever woman and the mother of Jace, the sexiest character in fiction, you are also brilliant (I love Yeats!) and well-read.

Second: My heart rate went up when I read this.

I can't wait!!

Chapter 18 and the Silent Brothers
When I read your short not-quite-explanation about Chapter 18, my heart skipped a beat. I have a really bad feeling that someone is gonna die. =[
I also have many theories about City of Glass. I made my friend read City of Bones, and she practically inhaled City of Ashes, and then we over-analyzed the books and what we know about CoG and brainstormed what will happen in said book.
And as I was rereading CoB, a question suddenly popped into my head, and it's been bugging me (thank the Lord for lj, and that you have one). The Silent Brothers (to be known from now on in this comment as the S-Bros because of my astounding laziness) have their lips sewn shut right? So what happens when they have to yawn? Or do they have runes to ward off yawns...? (If so, I would like one very much, please.)

Re: Chapter 18 and the Silent Brothers
Well, one could equally ask, how do they eat? The Silent Brothers are only sort of human. They live a long, long time, too. More about them in the Infernal Devices.

Is it factorum coeli et terrae or factorum caeli et terrae?

Sorry. Latin student. *blushes*

factorum coeli et terrae, I think. I could be wrong.

City of Glass
I'm so excited for this third book!!!
(Anonymous) on September 10th, 2008 01:52 am (UTC)

Also is it factorem rather than factorum?

(Now I just feel hideously rude.)

Well, here's the source:

Ahhhh, Chapter 7 & 9...it sounds like a huge drama will happen! Gack! I can't wait for CoG to come out...I've been indulging myself through fanfictions. TT__TT Pathetic, I know...but it seems so long until CoG!

Good luck with your editing! You can do it!! =DD

“Because I loved you, I took these tides of men into my hands, and wrote my will across the sky in stars."

this is absolutely beautiful.

Cassie Clare[info]cassandraclare on September 10th, 2008 03:41 am (UTC)
The whole thing:

I loved you, so I drew these tides of men into my hands
and wrote my will across the sky in stars
To earn you Freedom, the seven pillared worthy house,
that your eyes might be shining for me
When we came.

Death seemed my servant on the road, till we were near
and saw you waiting:
When you smiled, and in sorrowful envy he outran me
and took you apart:
Into his quietness.

Love, the way-weary, groped to your body, our brief wage
ours for the moment
Before earth's soft hand explored your shape, and the blind
worms grew fat upon
Your substance.

Men prayed me that I set our work, the inviolate house,
as a memory of you.
But for fit monument I shattered it, unfinished: and now
The little things creep out to patch themselves hovels
in the marred shadow
Of your gift.

I have noticed a lot of perturbed Twilighters turning to Jace for comfort, and I've tried to point my friends in that direction as well. This chapter list embodies why - it is YA lit, but it is so well thought out and has so much put into it. I love that.

I'm so ready for this book. Waiting all month for excerpts only builds my anticipation. Can October be here tomorrow?
Lindsay Leggett[info]akabins on September 10th, 2008 03:04 pm (UTC)
Reading this list just makes me more excited for City of Glass. It already sounds like a beautiful book (Though it would be more beautiful if two certain siblings turned out not really to be siblings so they could love without shame... sigh.)

Do you have an idea of when you'll begin The Infernal Devices?
Cassie Clare[info]cassandraclare on September 10th, 2008 03:27 pm (UTC)
Once I turn in the proofs of City of Glass, I'm going to London to do research for the Infernal Devices. I probably have about seven weeks of research, and then I'll start writing.
