Infernal Devices auction for Project Book Babe
One of the things that is absolutely true about being an author, especially for teens and kids, is that to succeed, you depend on a huge network of people — not just your editor and publisher, but reviewers, librarians, bloggers and booksellers — to get your books into the hands of people who will read and love them. Just one passionate advocate for your book can make all the difference.

One of the most passionate advocates for young adult literature out there in the book buying world is Faith Hochhalter, The Book Babe. She was absolutely lovely to me when I met her in Phoenix on tour for City of Ashes, and has hand-sold countless copies of my books. She's done the same for so many other authors like me, and is universally loved and respected in the kids book world — so you can imagine that the news that Faith, who is only twenty-seven, was recently diagnosed with breast cancer, hit the community like a ton of bricks.

This is why over 40 authors have come together to support Project Book Babe, which aims to raise enough money to support Faith while she goes through cancer treatment, and to help with her medical bills. They held a fabulous fundraising event on April 4 in Phoenix, which you may have already read about on Stephenie Meyer's site, where she and a dozen on authors like Shannon Hale, James Owen, and Dean Lorey auctioned off items live to raise money for the Project. Though I was on book tour and couldn't get to Phoenix for the event, I decided to do the next best thing and join the online auction, which features all sorts of cool items like books signed by Christopher Paolini and Lisa McMann, and Ally Carter's offer to critique the first ten pages of an aspiring writer's manuscript (just check the side of the page here for a list of what's up now.)

I decided to auction off the name of a character in my next Shadowhunter series, The Infernal Devices. Here's the listing (click text to go through to Ebay page):

Have a character in one of Cassandra Clare’s upcoming books named after you! Cassandra Clare will use the name of the winner in her upcoming series, The Infernal Devices, and include the full name of the winner in the acknowledgments.

So basically, yes, if you win the auction, you'll have a minor character in the ID series named after you, and I'll thank you in the acknowledgments and explain why.

They will also be auctioning off signed copies of my books, so you can bid on those as well (I don't have links as they have no gone up yet, but you can look out for them in the sidebar on the website or check the Project Book Babe store on Ebay.)

Faith has given so much to the book community and I'm glad to have a chance to give something back to her.

ETA: I know the auction listing says the winner will not receive a book as the publishing date isn't set, but I am happy to send the winner a signed copy once it's published.

That sounds amazing! Oh. I'm Heather, by the way. Your books were recommended to me by Holly Black, and I am looking so forward to reading City of Bones. ^^

This is an amazing idea. I will pray for her. The world needs people like her to get great books out in to it.

Good luck to all that is involved in the auction.

Wow this is really great! To see everyone band together to help someone as amazing as Faith is really heartwarming.

My name is Cassandra... I think we can all see the irony if I were to win the auction.

I'm going to bid anyway >.

Ah, if I hadn't just moved to Washington I would participate. I don't have a job yet but if I get one in the next week this is something I could be proud to spend money on. I hope everything works out, my Grandmother had breast cancer and got through it. I wish her the best...

I have no money to bid, but I did forward on a link to the projectbookbabe.com site to Neil Gaiman. He has a blog with a Really Wide Readership and occasionally will plug good causes such as this.
Perhaps he shall read my letter and post it. We'll see.

My best wishes and prayers for Faith's treatment to go well.

Fabulous idea! Best wishes and prayers to Faith, and I'm sure this project will find success.

Haha, my name would look odd in an Elizabethan time period, I imagine, and too bad I'm a penniless teen.

Cools
This is great. i wish i had enough money to bid but unfortunately my pocket money ain't that much.
I seriously can't wait for infernal devices. i love the Victorian era. And it's great to see a book to be based in this time. usually the books i read that are about this era are about women who have no other desires other than to please their husbands which drives me insane...!
So i'm glad about infernal devices.
Mortal instruments/ Victorian era...perfect! i know this series won't disapoint.

Donations
So, the auction's a brilliant idea, but it's no secret that few of us are rolling in enough cash to win. Still I'd hate to see charity limited at recieving something in return.

I was wondering if there were any donation sites out there for Faith. Even those of us who aren't loaded might be able to spare a little to help a worthy cause, and I'd trust my money to this before I would a sleazy infomercial any day.

Also, on the off chance that I recieve a sudden windfall and have the financial security to bid, does the winner have to use their own name? Because really, I could come up with so many names that I'd prefer to my own.

Re: Donations
Well, I didn't organize the Project, but I am pretty sure you can donate via the "Donate" button on the website I linked to. :)

Yep:

And no, you don't have to use your own name if you win.

Re: Donations
Bah, you beat me to it. My spatially challenged self found the link a few minutes after posting. Alas, I wouldn't notice a tab if it picketed itself on my front porch demanding greater website prominence or... okay, so the personification didn't work, but you get my point.

Thanks for posting the direct link though!

Cassie,
It was an honor to meet you on the 24th :)
I'm the one who asked the question about: Out of all of the characters that you've created if you could be one for one day which one would it be?
Well I loved the answer that you and Holly gave...

OMG!I couldn't love this series more!!!! :) I think Cassandra should write a fourth book! That would be sooooooooooo AWESOME!!! Anyway, I also think that the books should be made into movies. The only thing about that though, is that Cassandra should be there to help make the movies and have the most ideal characters ever!!

Seriously love this series!! Cassandra Clare your a GENIUUUS!!! lol! I think you should sooooo have these books made into movies. It be totally awesome! I couldn't imagine anything better. Cassie, you should choose the cast and help make the movies. It would be soooooooo kool! I also think that you should write a fourth book to the trilogy! Think about it!!

Auction
Cassandra,
I was the winner of the auction!!! It is such an honor that you name the character after my son. I am thrilled. I have always wanted to write a book with him as a character but being that I am SO NOT creative I figured this was the next best thing. LOL. I too am a TwilightMom and I think it was so generous of everyone to help out Faith it their own way. It is for a great cause and I know with all the support she will pull through this difficult time in her life. I was able to meet you earlier in the month at the TLA convention in Houston and that was fun. I am a big fan of your books and cant wait for the next series. Thanks again for this opportunity with the character name, I think this was coolest thing I have ever bought for my little boy. Margie Longoria (Mickeysgirl28@aol.com)

Oh wow... I've seen your books everywhere but I had no idea YOU wrote them! This might sound like a strange comment - I've followed your fanfiction for years and I was searching in vain for a copy of your Draco Trilogy. I was looking and looking but I could never understand why you removed them, they were such good stories. But NOW I understand! You're publishing your own work and, by the looks of it, doing extraordinarily well! Congratulations!

As a transitioning fanfiction-to-original-fiction writer, you're an inspiration to me. :) and while I lament that I will probably never find a copy of your Draco Trilogy, I WILL go buy your books now and support your work. I wish you the best of luck and who knows? Maybe some day when my writing gets picked up by a publisher, we'll meet. :) sounds like a good goal to me!

trivial questions
so I've been watching a lot of weird things on TV and there was this special on tv about Kabbalah explaining the religion and so on. It was interesting and all but my ears perked up when they were talking about how they put so much meaning into letters of the Hebrew alphabet that was considered the language of God. I was wondering if this was something that had inspired you with the whole rune idea in the City of Bones series.
Another question involves the titling. I was in this Roman& Christian history class and we were talking about St. Augustine writing the City of God, what that a template for your title. I mean it would make sense.
I've been mulling over this for a few weeks now and instead of studying for finals I just reread your books. Which I might add was a fine academic choice even if my grades don't reflect as much.

Re: trivial questions
Odd choice of entry to post these questions in! (Not that I mind, it's fine.)

"It was interesting and all but my ears perked up when they were talking about how they put so much meaning into letters of the Hebrew alphabet that was considered the language of God. I was wondering if this was something that had inspired you with the whole rune idea in the City of Bones series."

Sure, that's part of it. Most religions have a divine language. Hebrew is the divine language of Judaism, as Sanskrit is the divine language of Hinduism and Pali the divine language of Buddhism and so forth. Many religions and cultures have a language or alphabet that is considered the language of God. It's not a concept limited to one religion or culture.

"St. Augustine writing the City of God, what that a template for your title."

Not consciously. Subconsciously, who knows, I suppose. I remember thinking of Thomson's "City of Dreadful Night" at the time.
