City of Fallen Angels chapter titles
So below is a list of the titles of the chapters in City of Fallen Angels. This is in the mold of the post I made about the chapter titles of City of Glass, back in September of '08:

with little notes about the meanings of the titles, why I picked them, and sometimes, what they have to do with the story. This is instead of a Clockwork Angel excerpt for this month (you can also find the last two Clockwork Angel excerpts here and here.) This was originally posted over at Mundie Moms as a present for their first anniversary. HB, MMs!

Chapter One: A Proposition
In which Simon, who has been trying hard to live as normal a life as he can, finds out that's not going to be possible any more.

Chapter Two: Fear of Falling
This is the chapter that will be included in the paperback copy of City of Glass, so I won't say much about it, except it's Clary's POV.

Chapter Three: Sevenfold
And the Lord said unto him, Therefore whosoever slayeth Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold. And the Lord set a mark upon Cain, lest any finding him should kill him. Well, that whole Mark of Cain business wasn't just going to go away.

Chapter Four: The Art of Eight Limbs
This one contains a training sequence that involves Muay Thai, a martial art that's called "The Art of Eight Limbs" because it involves using hands, elbows, knees and feet as strike points. This is also the chapter that contains the quote from the Seelie Queen I Tweeted — the one about "he's bound to you, but does he love you?"

Chapter Five: Hell Calls Hell
This is Latin, from one of the Psalms, abyssus abyssum invocat. Also translated as "deep calls unto deep." In which Clary tries on a bridesmaid's dress.

Chapter Six: Wake The Dead
Pretty literal, actually.

Chapter Seven: Praetor Lupus
Those inclined toward Latin can have a whack at this one. This chapter has werewolves in it. :)

Chapter Eight: Walk in Darkness
"But he that hateth his brother is in darkness, and walketh in darkness, and knoweth not whither he goeth, because that darkness hath blinded his eyes." And in the meantime, Simon's band gets a gig.

Chapter Nine: From Fire Unto Fire
This is from Oscar Wilde: "Nay, let us walk from fire unto fire,
From passionate pain to deadlier delight,—
I am too young to live without desire."
I am sure everyone will be happy to know this chapter is mostly Clary and Jace.

Chapter Ten: 232 Riverside Drive
Quite literally the address of something important (I can't help but wonder if someone actually lives at this address — I have friends who live on Riverside Drive, though not this number...)

Chapter Eleven: Our Kind
In this case, "Our Kind" is vampires.

Chapter Twelve: Sanctuary
In which a character we know from Clockwork Angel makes a strange demand of the Nephilim.

Chapter Thirteen: Girl Found Dead
What it says on the tin!

Chapter Fourteen: What Dreams May Come*
“Max,” Jace said. “Max, I’m so sorry.”

Chapter Fifteen: Beati Bellicosi
The actual phrase in Latin is Beati Pacifici — blessed are the peacemakers. In this case, I altered it (hopefully accurately) to Blessed are the Warriors.

Chapter Sixteen: New York City Angels
Those who know the Thriving Ivory song Angels on the Moon will recognize this phrase.

Chapter Seventeen: Cain Rose Up
And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him. All of this stuff is from Genesis 4, the Cain and Abel story — it's thematically called up throughout the book since it's a story about family, murder, sin, forgiveness and blood.

Chapter Eighteen: Scars of Fire
This is actually from a Carl Sandburg poem:
"Wandering oversea singer,
Singing of ashes and blood,
Child of the scars of fire,
Make us one new dream, us who forget.
Out of the storm let us have one star."

Epilogue — As of now, the epilogue is just titled "epilogue." It's pretty short but, I think, packs a punch. I hope so!

*Everyone knows this one! But in that sleep of death, what dreams may come. Hamlet.

OMG OMG OMG. I can't wait for this book! I am just determined to have it the day it comes out. I will be pre-ordering it as soon as it's available for pre-order.

This only makes me more excited for when the book comes out. And I was jumping up and down inside when I saw the title for chapter 16, I LOVE "Angels on the Moon", it's my fave Thriving Ivory song. And I like how you are weaving the biblical stories, very very cool.

Thanks so much for this!! Keep up the good work!

I can't wait for this! Especially excited for Wake The Dead. It's cool that you've given us a little teaser for each chapter. Thanks for sharing!!

Looking even more forwards to reading this book. Very glad you're giving Simon his own story.

Thank you so much for this information. There are quite a few tidbits in here that make me desperately want to read the finished work.

Will you be running another contest like you did with CoG?
Cassie Clarecassandraclare on February 18th, 2010 06:24 pm (UTC)
Not for City of Fallen Angels, no. It's embargoed until its publication date. For Clockwork Angel, there will be a contest.

Sorry, but what does it mean: "This is the chapter that will be included in the paperback copy of City of Glass"? Am I missing something important about CoG?

Mmmm, tasty! <3 Oscar Wilde and general extreme angstyness. I can't wait!

Also: Muay Thai is my latest obsession--or rather, Ong-Bak II and Chocolate, which are the most amazing movies I've ever seen, pretty much.

I'm so glad to hear that it won't be only Simon's story, but Clary and Jace's as well. God, I miss them!

Thanks so much for posting these! I am so excited!!!! I think my favorite one is the title of Chapter 14. I love Shakespeare.

Such great timing for this. I'm currently re-reading the series (Book 2, right where *someone* turns into a vampire) and I was dreading the fact that starting the third book will happen soon.

Gah. This is gonna be so delicious.

This is kind of a weird question, so I apologize in advance. I'm writing a play for my senior thesis, and I've been trying and failing to give it a title for well over a year and a half now. I was reading the explanation behind Cain Rose Up and the part about it's a story about family, murder, sin, forgiveness and blood and I realized it's kind of perfect because that basically covers most of the major themes in my story, so I'm going to reread Genesis for more inspiration and hopefully find another fitting phrase, but would you mind terribly if I used it as my title? Please let me know. Thank you!

And I'm sure you've heard this more than enough times, but oh my GOD, there are no words to describe how ridiculously excited I am for this book.
Cassie Clarecassandraclare on February 19th, 2010 03:39 am (UTC)
Of course I would not mind. It's a quote from the Bible — it belongs to everyone to use.

AH, I'm so excited for this book, and the Clockwork series too!
I was just wondering, where on earth do you get your inspiration from!? I see a lot of quotes and different myths and stories. It just amazes me how you can use little things like that and create something just as good! :)

Thank you for sharing the book titles with us, its really nice to have something solid to look forward to. On a side note, I am also glad that you will involve some of the other characters from the City of Bones series. I sure hope Magnus and Alec are part of those involved.

I've always loved your chapter titles. Of course I cannot wait for CoFA or Clockwork Angel but I can be patient. *sigh* A whole year of wait. Thank you for your wonderful works!! I've actually been in book stores and seen undecided people thumbing through books on shelves and handed them a copy of City of Bones and told them to buy the book and they wouldn't be disappointed.

Oh interesting! I'm psyched for this book! If there was any book in the world I'd be anticipating for it'd definitely be this one! March 2011 is so far away though D=

What makes me wonder is chapter fourteen. What could have happened... hmm.

I read through some of the comments on here and I was just wondering what the contest is all about...? (I'm sorry I wasn't around earlier to know about it =P)

Oh...my....god! I can't wait! I loved the Mortal Instruments series so much! Couldn't put the books down. And I'm wondering why Jace is saying sorry?! Man! I want it to be out now! Can't breath...need.....to....breath! Okay. Anyway, I hope it's great, and it probably will be, because the rest of the books in the series were amazing! Sorry. Babbling on and on.

So many of the fangirls on the e-mail list are getting excited about "Wake the Dead", and thinking about Max; I know someone mentioned vampires; I would like to be the sole voice of the unconventional, and think about zombies.
