Usually when people ask me "What will you sign?" or "Can I bring books from home?" I say "I'll sign anything" and "Bring as many books as you want." However, publishers and bookstores are really cracking down on author events. Fewer authors are being sent on tour and fewer bookstores are willing to hold author events. I talked to a store manager on my last tour, at an indie bookstore, who said it wasn't worth it for them to hold an event: they had to pay to advertise the event, to keep the store open late, for extra staff to handle the line, and what they got was a lot of people who had bought the books elsewhere, and they sold maybe three or four copies — and lost a lot of money. Which is hard on an indie bookstore in the best of times, and these are not the best of times. *I* go on tour because I love meeting readers in person and that's the only way to do it (for me, economically, it doesn't make any difference where you bought your books) but for this tour I have received an edict from On High:

"The purchase of one copy of Clockwork Angel at the store is required to be on the signing line."

That means, yes, you have to buy a copy of Clockwork Angel at the store I'm signing at in order to get it, or anything, signed. Once you buy that copy I will sign whatever you bring - backlist titles, your cat, your notebook, you name it. But the people at the store will be checking to see you bought a copy of Clockwork there before you can get online. (Now, if this is a bookstore in your area, and you don't want to wait for the signing date, you can probably buy the book there the day it comes out and just come back with your receipt showing you got it there.) If you already have a copy of CA, you could always buy one for a friend or to prop up a wobbly table. But them's the rules — I don't make them, and I can't break them. As Maggie says here: "Please, please, for all of these signings -- I'm happy to sign multiple books, but you must buy at least one book from the store where I'm signing. PRETTY PLEASE. It takes resources to put on a successful signing, and to not buy a book there makes it harder for them to justify the next event."

2) As I've posted about before, the American/Canadian copy of City of Glass contains chapters from both Clockwork Angel and City of Fallen Angels. Because these copies aren't available outside North America (unless you are very determined) I have decided to hold a contest to give away two copies of the paperback of Glass. This contest is only open to people outside North America. I'll ship anywhere in the world if you win — except the US or Canada.

So the contest rules are as follows, you can do one of two things, Love or War:

1)War: Pick two characters from the TMI series, or from Clockwork Angel if you've already read it, and tell me which of them would win in a fight. You can cross the series — would Jace beat Will? Would Isabelle beat Nate or Sophie? Do keep in mind if you want to use Simon that he is well-nigh indestructible by the end of City of Glass and it'll be tough to find someone to square off against him. :)

2) Love: Pick two characters from the TMI series, or from Clockwork Angel if you've already read it, and tell me why they should be together romantically. You can cross the series — Would Will like Isabelle? Would she hit him with a shoe? How bout Simon/Sophie? What you can't do is use any canon pairing — I don't need to be convinced of the love of Clary/Jace, Alec/Magnus, Charlotte/Henry or Luke/Jocelyn. Anything else is fair game, no matter how weird. (Inquisitor/Inquisitor?)

I'll run the contest until September 12th, and then announce two winners, one from the Love category and one from War. Post your entries in the comments — you don't need an LJ account to post, but if you post anonymously, give me a name or a nickname or some way to call you out if you win!

And did I mention as a side note.... ONLY FOUR MORE DAYS TILL CLOCKWORK ANGEL!

buying books there
what about the people who can't afford to buy the book but have the older ones. i don't think thats fair to us. however, i do understand it but it sucks that when i come to deactur i won't be able to get my book signed or my friend won't be able to.and why does it have to be clockwork angel and not one of your other books?????????

Re: buying books there
That's the publisher's decision (or what they worked out with the bookstore.) It has to be Clockwork Angel because the point of sending me on this tour, for the publisher, is to promote and sell Clockwork Angel, not my other books. When they decide whether I will ever tour again, they will look to see how many copies of *Clockwork Angel* they sold by sending me on tour this time. And if it isn't sufficient, I won't be sent on tour again.

You can always talk to the bookstore people at the event and tell them your situation — they'd probably let you on line if, say, you and your friend split a copy. Bookstores don't want to be crazy or unreasonable or mean to fans — they just want to be able to stay open.

COG Contest
I would pair up Maia and Raphael because both of them can't forget about their past lives so easily. Maia can't escape the memories of her brother.Raphael still wants to hold on to this faith. Why not combine their rejections of the past and the future to an acceptance of the present:)
And another plus would be their relationship as a symbol of peace between vampires and werewolves.
(Why not pair up Maia and Simon for peace then? Well, just because I want him to end up with Isabelle:))

War
I think in a fight between Jocelyn and the Inquisitor.
I think Joceylyn would win because i think the Inquisitor is more of a mind control/rune user to help in a fight, when Jocelyn is more of a hands downs/kick ass girl in a fight.

Sigh, this is very exciting...I can't believe in four days I'll have Clockwork Angel in my possession!

Just a quick question--and sorry if you've already answered this--but say I buy a copy of CA and everything, is there like a limit of signing things? Can I have you sign CA and City of Bones or are we allowed only one book?

COG Contest - Amatis and Hodge
I think Amatis and Hodge would make a good pair seeing as they both have always been secluded from the rest of society in some way. Amatis because she chose not to involve herself with the Clave's decisions after her marriage with Stephen ended and after she had cast Luke out of her life, and Hodge because he was trapped in the Institute for so long. I think they would have been able to understand each other in some way because of their loneliness. Also, they both were ashamed with their deeds in some way too, Amatis because of the way she treated Luke, and Hodge because of his betrayal to Jace, Isabelle, and Alec. They both had hurt people they loved and were ashamed of it, so I think they could have helped each other come into terms with their deeds and comfort each other to eventually let go of their past.

I haven't read in Clockwork Angels yet but sooo excited for it. Love your books Cassie.

bummer! I'm about 20 minutes from Princeton and totally would have gone, but I'll be down the shore on Vacation starting on Saturday! :(

Hmm... the Inquisitor (pretending she's still alive) vs. Isabelle; two very fierce female characters fighting against each other. The Inquisitor would probably win, though, because she was driven by revenge while Isabelle was very protective of Alec and Jace.

Hairballs East of Eden?
Someone other than myself has to have wondered if it was the Institute that Chairman Meow disappeared to on the night of that party, right?

...right?

Wish I lived in the US right now :(

Hmm. Simon and Magnus would be a good fight. Magnus is a powerful magician and he doesn't seem particularly interested in dying so he would defend himself well. He's clever too, so he'd most like try to trap Simon during the fight to defeat him. Then again, Simon is a vampire AND he has the Mark of Cain so Magnus won't be able to kill him. All in all, I'd say Magnus would put up a good fight and he can potentially injure Simon but Simon would win because of the Mark.

and again cassandra:

please publish ur books in >german< in germany BEFORE the english ones!!
i always have to translate for my little brother :)
Cassie Clarecassandraclare on August 27th, 2010 05:07 pm (UTC)
1) I don't decide when my books come out in Germany, my publisher does.

2) The books have to be translated. That takes time. All my publishers get the final draft at the same time. But my German publisher, unlike my American publisher, must spend months on creating a translation.

(Not to mention that it wouldn't even be legal for my German publisher to release a version before my American publisher, but that's a whole other thing.)

war!!!
Magnus would obviously trump Jace in a fight. i picture it like the classic scene: Magnus' hand on Jace's head, holding him back while Jace furiously swings his fists. :) magic powers aside, Magnus is older, wiser, and sexier. :p He would make Jace cry like a little boy,

War
In the subject of war between Jace and Simon, I believe Jace would beat Simon. Why? Simon is still a fledgling and is still getting accostomated into his new "life" he has no experience in fighting except for those 10 minutes he fought with the Shadowhunters & Downworlders in the COG. Jace on the otherhand has been trained since birth to be a fighter and would therefore totally wipe out Simon.

War... /Jace Versus Simon= Winner: Jace.\ /Jace Versus Will. Winner: [fill choice here]\
Mmm I definately agree. In a fight, although vampires do have quite amount of power behind them, however Jace has been trained all his life to fight in all situations. Fighting Vampires are no exception. Especially since Downworlders and Shadowhunters were on a very thin line with eachother. He would need to know how to bring one down if a group of Vampires went rouge against the Shadowhunters.

Okay, so fight between Will and Jace, who do you think would win? Both are arrogant egotists with a lot of experience. Who'd Win, who'd lose and why.

Lurve, baby.
Okay, you may not like this, but for me: Jem from Clockwork Angel and Alec from Mortal Instruments.

Come on! Jem SO clearly has a crush on the blue-eyed, black-haired Will, but Will is a) too into Tessa and b) too full of self-loathing to see it. Alec loves Jace's blonde, angelic looks but Jace is a) too into Clary and b) too flip and macho.

Now, I seriously LOVE Magnus, but I feel as if he'd get a bit tired of Alec's self-centredness and immaturity after a while. Alec just doesn't treat him right - I think Magnus needs someone to spoil him (I volunteer!).

On the other hand, Jem's beautiful insight and kindness would show Alec how to channel his passion and sensitivity into useful rather than self-destructive channels. Alec's single-minded focus on the ones he loves would give Jem a reason to fight for life. They've both lost family in terrible, traumatic circumstances. They would be so beautiful together. Oh my gosh, I'm seriously tearing up just thinking about it.

Jem and Alec, forever!

First: Will you pick a random winner or the best from the categories?

And can a human be in love with a angel? 'Cause then I'd totally pick Raziel + Clary. Just imagine how powerful they would be together! Clary is clever and brave while Raziel has ... you know ... created the first shadowhunter. :D And may I add that angel/human (eventhough Clary is a shadowhunter and not a normal human) relationships are really popular these days? :P

- Rebecca :)
Cassie Clarecassandraclare on August 27th, 2010 07:19 pm (UTC)
I was going to pick my favorite from each category.

Raziel is about a hundred feet tall when Clary meets him so I guess if you can work out the logistics ...
