Usually when people ask me "What will you sign?" or "Can I bring books from home?" I say "I'll sign anything" and "Bring as many books as you want." However, publishers and bookstores are really cracking down on author events. Fewer authors are being sent on tour and fewer bookstores are willing to hold author events. I talked to a store manager on my last tour, at an indie bookstore, who said it wasn't worth it for them to hold an event: they had to pay to advertise the event, to keep the store open late, for extra staff to handle the line, and what they got was a lot of people who had bought the books elsewhere, and they sold maybe three or four copies — and lost a lot of money. Which is hard on an indie bookstore in the best of times, and these are not the best of times. *I* go on tour because I love meeting readers in person and that's the only way to do it (for me, economically, it doesn't make any difference where you bought your books) but for this tour I have received an edict from On High:
"The purchase of one copy of Clockwork Angel at the store is required to be on the signing line."
That means, yes, you have to buy a copy of Clockwork Angel at the store I'm signing at in order to get it, or anything, signed. Once you buy that copy I will sign whatever you bring - backlist titles, your cat, your notebook, you name it. But the people at the store will be checking to see you bought a copy of Clockwork there before you can get online. (Now, if this is a bookstore in your area, and you don't want to wait for the signing date, you can probably buy the book there the day it comes out and just come back with your receipt showing you got it there.) If you already have a copy of CA, you could always buy one for a friend or to prop up a wobbly table. But them's the rules — I don't make them, and I can't break them. As Maggie says here: "Please, please, for all of these signings -- I'm happy to sign multiple books, but you must buy at least one book from the store where I'm signing. PRETTY PLEASE. It takes resources to put on a successful signing, and to not buy a book there makes it harder for them to justify the next event."
2) As I've posted about before, the American/Canadian copy of City of Glass contains chapters from both Clockwork Angel and City of Fallen Angels. Because these copies aren't available outside North America (unless you are very determined) I have decided to hold a contest to give away two copies of the paperback of Glass. This contest is only open to people outside North America. I'll ship anywhere in the world if you win — except the US or Canada.
So the contest rules are as follows, you can do one of two things, Love or War:
1)War: Pick two characters from the TMI series, or from Clockwork Angel if you've already read it, and tell me which of them would win in a fight. You can cross the series — would Jace beat Will? Would Isabelle beat Nate or Sophie? Do keep in mind if you want to use Simon that he is well-nigh indestructible by the end of City of Glass and it'll be tough to find someone to square off against him. :)
2) Love: Pick two characters from the TMI series, or from Clockwork Angel if you've already read it, and tell me why they should be together romantically. You can cross the series — Would Will like Isabelle? Would she hit him with a shoe? How bout Simon/Sophie? What you can't do is use any canon pairing — I don't need to be convinced of the love of Clary/Jace, Alec/Magnus, Charlotte/Henry or Luke/Jocelyn. Anything else is fair game, no matter how weird. (Inquisitor/Inquisitor?)
I'll run the contest until September 12th, and then announce two winners, one from the Love category and one from War. Post your entries in the comments — you don't need an LJ account to post, but if you post anonymously, give me a name or a nickname or some way to call you out if you win!
And did I mention as a side note.... ONLY FOUR MORE DAYS TILL CLOCKWORK ANGEL!
